Broadening Participation in the Geosciences

SAGUARO is designed to increase the number of underrepresented students seeking geoscience-related degrees at The University of Arizona (UA).  The project is designed to:

  1. Focus outreach towards participants in the Arizona MESA Program and to local high school students

  2. Attract a diverse base of program participants from introductory geoscience courses at UA

  3. Establish a support network of geoscience faculty, graduate student mentors (GSMs), and interns

  4. Recruit talented students from the pool of participants to conduct research, teaching, and outreach activities in southern Arizona

  5. Improve public perceptions of the geosciences and geoscience-related career fields with a focus on underrepresented student groups at UA and other local colleges and high schools

SAGUARO was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Geoscience Directorate, Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG), award #0914401
