SAGUARO is designed to increase the number of underrepresented students seeking geoscience-related degrees at The University of Arizona (UA). The project is designed to:
Focus outreach towards participants in the Arizona MESA Program and to local high school students
Attract a diverse base of program participants from introductory geoscience courses at UA
Establish a support network of geoscience faculty, graduate student mentors (GSMs), and interns
Recruit talented students from the pool of participants to conduct research, teaching, and outreach activities in southern Arizona
Improve public perceptions of the geosciences and geoscience-related career fields with a focus on underrepresented student groups at UA and other local colleges and high schools
SAGUARO was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Geoscience Directorate, Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG), award #0914401
